....

After the fantastic first series of The Sopranos the second series was long awaited and eager to live up to the popularity which had been generated by this highly entertaining show.

Of course the second series doesn’t disappoint in at all. A little slow to begin but certainly picks up the pace later on.

This package contains 6 discs containing 13 episodes plus extra features.

Here’s a quick overview of each episode.

Episode 14: Guy Walks into a Psychiatrists office: Tony’s sister Janice arrives in town to look after their mother. But first impressions often lie and it appears she has other tasks on the agenda. Sal returns after a long absence but is still under suspicion of talking to the FBI. And of course Tony is still in need of his psychiatric help but unfortunately she won’t see him anymore because of her growing interest.

Episode 15: Do not Resuscitate: Tony’s mother Livia is still creating waves in the family convinced that her children are trying to get rid of her. Janice continues to infuriate Tony over this subject. Uncle Junior is released from jail with a medical condition and is finding it difficult to keep up with the family while he is being tracked everywhere he goes. Sal is making it more difficult to explain himself and the FBI takes a bigger hold on him.

Episode 16: Toodle Fucking Oo: Richie Aprile is now also out of jail and back to his old stomping ground to find he longer has any say in what the family are doing. His attitude just creates more unneeded waves with Tony. Richie is not only looking for his old business back but he also starts up a bit of a thing with old girlfriend Janice (Tony’s sister).

Episode 17: Commendatori: Tony and the gang head home to Italy to meet some of the original "family" of Zi Vittorio. However the head of the family is no longer as active and his daughter Annalisa is running the business. Tony manages to make a good deal with Annalisa for some manpower back home.

Episode 18: Big Girls Don’t Cry: Richie is working his way back in the family by using Uncle junior to get what he wants. With the return of Tony and the crew from Italy there’s a bit of a shake up in the ranks and a few of them are less than impressed with their new appointments. Tony is still having anxiety management issues, and is a little taken aback when his shrink rings to make an appointment too finally see him again.

Episode 19: The Happy Wanderer: David Scatino is let in on the family card game and ends up way too far in debt. This adds to his debt with Richie and of course on the other end of the scale David is father to a friend of Meadows from school. So this whole situation gets very ugly. Richie is still making waves and now with the support of Janice he gets himself more and more worked up over his part in the business.

Episode 20: D-Girl: Anthony Jr finds himself questioning the meaning of life and whether god really does exist. Sal is thrown in to fix the situation and get Anthony back on track at his confirmation ceremony. Sal however is trying to deal with his own problems as the FBI have wired him up for the occasion and Sal is doing his best not to record anything too incriminating.

Episode 21: Full Leather Jacket: Richie is now trying to worm his way back into a good place with the Family by giving Tony a leather jacket he won in a fight many years ago. Of course Richies offer of good will is way to late and Tony doesn’t want the Jacket anyway. After he gives it away Richie starts to get more and more angry with Tony. One of the new recruits decides to take out Christopher in order to please Richie. Carmella is a little too pushy in asking for a letter of recommendation for Meadow to attend Georgetown University.

Episode 22: From Where to Eternity: Christopher returns from the dead after a big scare and some creepy dreams. The crew learns of the real instigator behind Christopher’s shooting and they head off to collect Matt. Carmela and Tony are having some problems at home with Tony’s mistress finally getting the flick. Jennifer (Tony’s shrink) is still having some difficulties consulting him.

Episode 23: Bust Out: It seems word is out that there is a witness to the killing of Matt and Tony is worried about the implications of this. He starts organising the business in case he needs to disappear at any stage. Sal is under more and more pressure from the FBI to cough up some more incriminating info on Tony. Tony and Richie are putting the squeeze on David for his debt using David’s business to Launder goods for them.

Episode 24: House Arrest: Tony is under increasing pressure to clean up the business and make look just a little more legitimate. This is all jeopardised by Richie dealing drugs on the garbage removal routes and Tony takes a strong hand with him over it. Uncle Junior is not doing to well while he’s confined to the house and meets an old friend to keep him company; Catherine Romano.

Episode 25: Knight in White Satin Armour: Richie is still trying to cause trouble by seeking the help of the other capo’s to bring Tony down a peg. But Richie gets his own back when his plan is blown out in the open and he then becomes the target. Through a twist of Fate Janice ends Richie and then she heads out of town to escape.

Episode 26: Funhouse: Everything appears to going too well for the family, and of course it is. As Tony starts to settle a little everything is again blown open with his mother being detained by the FBI with Fraudulent plane tickets from Tony. Sal has been uncovered by the family for ratting to the FBI. Tony is arrested for the plane tickets but returns home just in time for Meadows Graduation. Seems this could be the last time we will see Sal.

So how does this DVD Scrub Up?

VIDEO
The 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is a great improvement over the pan and scan offering for series one. Images are generally very sharp and clear with some instances where the image loses detail momentarily but this is not terribly noticeable in the grand scheme of things. There are some noticeable instances of edge enhancement at times. Shadow detail is quite good throughout.

The colour palette is generally dull and muted but this is more an intentional effect than a fault and really does give the image a more realistic impression.

There are no Mpeg artefacts but Film to video artefacts are prevalent in the form of ailiasing throughout the series. Film artefacts are few and very far between and certainly do not distract from viewing at all.

AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track for the first 3 episodes is less than impressive. While the series is of course dialogue based and the dialogue is clear and easy to understand at all times the 2.0 soundtrack is quite obviously bland and lacking any real effects. Once the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio kicks in for the rest of the episodes the quality is well improved and quite a noticeable difference. All of a sudden we have surround and directional effects which lift the audio track right up out of the mundane.

The surrounds are used quite frequently to support the score and effects and the LFE channel is quite active and at times really kicks in with gunshots and other effects.

The 5.1 track is a marked improvement and really a very good track.
