So how does this transfer hold up?
VIDEO
Well, Well, Well, (three Holes in the ground). So is it ME or do these NTSC
1.33:1 transfer leave ALL of our FREINDS PAL transfers for dead?????
As annoyed as i am at Warner for unleashing ANOTHER NTSC
region 4 DVD to the Australian Marketplace, there is no denying that this is the BEST
looking Friends DVD i've seen to date.
While we're not talking movie quality, this really is
pretty darn good for a TV show On DVD (excluding the stunning looking Star Trek
remasters).
The Pilot Episode is perhaps the least impressive looking
of all 12 eps, but is equally as good, if not a fraction better, than the best looking of
any previous FRIENDS DVD release (ie season 7).
The area most improved upon is that of detail. the
haziness the plagued previous releases, is of a much lesser degree on this 2 discs, and so
there's a lot more clarity to the images on screen. Colour saturation is well
balanced and looks great across the board.
While there are still diffferences in quality from episode
to episode #9 and #10 are the absolute best looking of them all. The Step-up in
quality going from "the One With Ross's Wedding, to "The One with All the
Thanksgiving" is quite an eye opener, as the whole picture jumps out at you.
Sadly the intro the the Thanksgiving episode begins with a rather nasty looking bit of
telecine jitter as the camera passes across the set.
Unlike previous FRIENDS DVDs, BOTH these discs are Dual
Layered, so the only time to need to handle to disc, is once you've finished watching the
first 6 best of episodes.
Warner have done something else a little nicer with this
DVD in that if you press "PLAY ALL" it not only does that BUT the time counter
donesn't reset once an episode is over, but rather continues on from the past episode, so
at teh end of disc 2, your counter will show that 144 minutes has past. |
