Tim Allen Hack

Samsung DVD905

First and foremost, by performing the Track cutting mod, you will void your Warranty, I take absolutely NO RESPONSIBILITY for what you do to your DVD player.  If you don't agree to these terms then please DO NOT read the rest of this page......otherwise AARRGGH ARRGGH ARRGGH.

BEFORE you read on Please know that to PLAY ALL DVDs without any fiddling around you need to have the newer code in MIC2 (you know the one that won't work with the Trick Play).  After performing this circumci....i mean cut, I played the following titles.

Die Hard 3 - Roadshow - region 4  (no problems)

BStoker's Dracula - CTS - Region 1 (no problems)

Contact - Warner  - region 1 & 4 (no problems)

Frighteners - Universal - region 1

Scream 1 & 2- B Vista - region 1

Tomorrow Never Dies  - MGM- Region 1 ( I experienced another, none regional, none parental lock problem with 2 copies of this DVD that locked the machine in a few places, however, with a newer code in the EPROM called VIC2 this problem went away...thank god)

Terminator 2 : Judgement Day - Live - region 1    (no problems)

Frighteners and Scream would goto the PARENTAL LOCK menu and refused to play the disc, with the OLD code for MIC2 (my old chip has the following info written on its label being "V1.541 /SAU" ), but they played fine with the NEW code in MIC2, so it seems that with the old MIC2 code you can easily play everything but Universal and BVista....this is as a result of Samsung leaving off the parental control of their player....it seems they may have forgotten to grant FULL access though.....but i'm not 100% on that.....I am told that if you stop start and fart arse around with these types of discs that show up the parental lock menu, you can play the movie without further problems (at least for that session)

Contact (an RSDL title, played all the way thru rather than pausing at the end of the first layer as it does with the trick Play method)

If you want to get the newer codes, ask Samsung to upgrade it BEFORE hacking the machine as the new code fixes a problem with RSDL titles where if you are on the second layer and try to reverse back into the first layer, the disc locks up sending the machine into a spinning frenzy, nasty stuff).
There are now a few region 4 RSDL dvds out there (Contact, Postman , and region 0 Lady in White & Silence of the Lamb's : Criterion Edition) .  A good lie would be that you want to buy them BUT have heard of the layer change problem on sammy machines that with the old code that will trick play region 1 titles (most agents should  know of this trick play now, if they don't SHOW THEM :-)...I've tried to copy the code from BOTH my EPROMS and it seems there is something tricky with them as the code comes out as 7's and F's, so if you are after the code contacting Samsung seems your only hope......

Remove the screws  from the case of your Samsung DVD905 (2 each side, 3 at rear along top)

The board is upside down and the area to cut is actually on this side......(nice)

Position the DVD player so as the FRONT of the player is facing you.

There is a screw along the RHS side of the player, positioned about 55 mm in.  The Track you cut is just near to it.

From the front of the RHS of the board, measure ALONG 85 mm.  then measure IN 10 mm.  this will take you to the middle of a small square that looks like a tiny Floppy Disk.

sammy2.gif (73185 bytes)

This square is very easy to see as it is all by itself and the front end of it has a small hole in it, and from this hole is a short track that goes to the edge of the square.  The idea of this is to ground the signal that derives from pin 92 of the chip called MIC1 (Toshiba TMP93CS41F)
(if you place a multi-meter on pin92 and on the line within the square you will get a current flow)

sammy3.gif (275323 bytes)

So all you need to do is cut the little line, with either a razor blade, stanley knife or other thin, yet very sharp tool.   I cut mine right on the edge as you can see using  a stanley knife.

(NOW if you place a multi-meter on pin92 and on the line within the square you will NOT get a current flow, so you know you have cut it deep enough)

Happy DVD'ing fellow sammy owners, you now have a multizoned DVD player.....
