I am an all time lover of classic Disney type animated films and this is no exception. While it is not by any means one of the greatest, it is still a visual feast of animation and a great story to boot.

2 scheming characters Tulio (Kevin Kline) and Miguel ( Kenneth Brannagh) are setting off on a voyage inside some water Barrels aboard the ship of Cortez in 16th century Spain.

The larrikin young men have come across a map of the Road to Eldorado, the City of Gold. Through an amazing escape from the ship aided by a horse they manage to get washed ashore on an island right at the foot of the Road to Eldorado. They quickly find their way and are surprised when they arrive to be accepted as gods. The City of Eldorado is as it has been described beautiful and full of gold and somewhat gullible people who believe these two crooks are actually gods. The token attractive female Chel (Rosie Perez) has also taken a liking to the pair but has other plans in mind. Showered with gifts of gold and precious items they quickly become accustomed to living the highlife but plan to make a quick getaway with as much gold as possible.

There is but one disbeliever Tzekel-Kan (Armand Assante) who does not believe the two are gods and challenges them on many occasions to prove their immortality and capability of achieving the impossible and remarkably enough they manage to bumble their way through.

This is the bulk of the plot, which isn’t really terribly complicated but does certainly hold enough attention to warrant it’s occasional flaws. From here the story explores the departure of the main characters and the finale to the story which I won’t give away for anyone who hasn’t seen it.

So how does this transfer hold up?

VIDEO
The 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is simply superb. This is one of few reference quality transfers I have seen to date but I simply cannot pick a fault anywhere. The animation is quite complicated with enormous amounts of detail to be seen. There are no film or mpeg artefacts and certainly no problems with grain.

The colour spectrum on offer is amazing and for an animated film this has to be one of the best-coloured films I have seen recently. With lots of rich and yet vibrant colours your eyes can barely keep up with everything on the screen for the amazing colours will have you glued to one section.

This is a perfect transfer.

AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is also of excellent quality. Dialogue plays a big part in this film as the two main characters are continually conversing and this is clear and easy to understand at all times.

The surround channels are used constantly to support the score and the rest of the effects for the film. There is certainly a feeling of being there, which is enhanced by the enveloping surrounds. The LFE channel wasn’t used as often as I had expected but you certainly knew it was there when it did kick in.

The score from Elton John, Tim Rice and Hans Zimmer was great but not in the same league as The Lion King (which I admit I still play in the car at full volume, and embarrass myself at the lights). The songs are memorable and great to sing along with, but this composing team will never be able to beat The Lion King soundtrack no matter how hard they try

EXTRAS

  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Audio Commentary (directors): Not the best of commentaries but certainly worth a listen even if it is more for entertainment rather than technical explanations.
  • Featurette: Behind the Scenes: Not much value in this one. This is more of a promotional T.V. piece which just gives ongoing praise to others working on the film.
  • Featurette: Basics of Animation: A series of animation stills from the film voiced by the directors. Quite a dull feature really.
  • Music Video: Someday out of the Blue (Elton John): a great piece with a cute animated Elton John which is good for a giggle.
  • Featurette: Making of The Prince of Egypt: A generic behind the scenes doco with interviews of the cast and crew. 26 minutes

OVERALL
This is a wonderful story that no child should go without, unless of course this path of religion is not your choice. Even so the story holds up well on it’s own without any other implications
