Goldeneye
If you like James Bond movies, than this DVD offering from MGM/UA is the DVD for you. A simple word to describe it, is breathtaking. This very popular DVD has been out for more than six months now and still is one of the best looking DVD's on the market. Starring Pierce BROSNAN in his first role as the famous 007, it centres around the story of a deadly satellite weapon falling into the wrongs threatening to send a powerful electromagnetic pulse into the heart of London destroying everything with an electric circuit. The film begins with Bond bungie jumping down a very, very long and steep dam wall to a hidden Russian chemical warfare laboratory down below. The following introduction scenes are so chock full of action that you barely have time to catch your breath.
The film is vintage James Bond with non stop action from start to finish, it also stars Sean BEAN (Patriot Games) as the British Agent turned arch enemy of Bond 006. But of course this would'nt be a James Bond film without the usual beautiful women wowing at his side, in this film they are two of them the beautiful Izabella Scorupco and Famke Janssen as the beautiful but dangerous "Xenia Onatopp". The way in which she disposes of her enemies in this movie is that if you have to die, you'd be more than happy to die at her hands or should I say legs.
The feature comes in both the theatrical widescreen (2.35:1) which incidentally is enhanced for 16 x 9 televisions plus also the formatted Pan & Scan version. Also provided is the original Theatrical Trailer. The image is just about picture perfect with beautiful well saturated colours and great flesh tones. The transfer is also razor sharp with excellent clarity. This really is a demo disc and the one to show off to friends who have not seen a DVD movie before.
The audiotrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 plus the downmixed Dolby Prologic. The 5.1 track really rocks, if you want a movie that is really going to thump the walls from start to finish, this is it. The opening theme song written by 'Bono' and 'The Edge' of U2 fame and sung by Tina Turner is a perfect match for this great movie and if you have'nt guessed by now this movie really impressed me. However that being said I have heard of problems experienced by some owners in respect of selecting the audio track. At the start of the movie you are presented with the choice of selecting either the 5.1 or Surround track version, the problem encountered I think by the owners of first generation DVD players is that the film defaults to the surround track even after selecting the 5.1 . I am pretty sure that this was caused by a hardware compatibility glitch that Toshiba for instance provided a chip upgrade free of charge which overcame this. However you may want to look into this further if are considering purchasing this DVD.
As previously stated this is an excellent action movie and a must to own, highly recommended.
