Wow isn’t this a blast from the past. I can just remember these from when I was a kid. Although i also remember they got better in the sequels.

The New female Mayor has announced that anyone can now apply to join the Police Academy. Hence the onslaught of distinctly non police-worthy characters that join.

Steve Guttenberg is (Mahony) the unlikely who ends up at the academy to avoid jail time. Mahony has a liking for getting a laugh and while Captain Harris (GW Bailey) does his best to make life miserable for all the new recruits the antics of Mahony make the whole experience that much more enjoyable.

Add to this the vocal talents of Jones (Michael Winslow) and of course the big and threatening attitude of Tackleberry (David Graf).

This really is about it for the general plot of the film; it’s basically your average Hollywood senseless humour, which is pretty much requiring you to leave your brain at the door because you certainly won’t need it at any time.

So how does this transfer hold up?

VIDEO
The 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer isn’t too bad really considering it’s well over 15 years old. Shadow detail is less than acceptable in any of the darker or night scenes.

The transfer is generally sharp but lapsed into a little softness at times. The colour palette was also a tad on the bland side, with dull and muted colours, which didn’t really make any impact on improving the transfer at all.

There were no MPEG artefacts and little if any film artefacts. Ailiasing and shimmering were absent as this wasn’t an overly sharp transfer this is to be expected.

.

AUDIO
The Dolby Digital mono soundtrack was also very much on the bland side. The film was originally recorded in mono, which is surprising in itself given that it’s not really that old.

The dialogue was generally clear and easy to understand. There is little if any range in the soundtrack to speak of.

The recording is clear but could have benefited from a remastered track.
