Yet another Dark Horse strip to make it to
the big screen, Mystery Men, perhaps the most stupid of them all, (but a hell of a lot of
fun if you like this sort of thing) is about a group of wanna-be superheros.
The Shovellor (William H Macy), Mr Furious (Ben Stiller) and The blue Raja(Hank Azaria)
initally makes up this team and are out and about trying to help the defenceless with
their sheer incompetance, but are constantly being overshadowed by the true superhero of
Champion city, Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear, having a great time here). With Casanova
Frankenstein (Geoffry Rush obviously trying to maintain some versatility as an actor, and
sporting a german/french accent to boot), just out of the loony bin, Captain Amazing is
captured and so the 3 Stooges band together to find even more inept superheros for their
group. So Joins The Bowler (Janeane Garofalo, who has her dead dads skull inside a
bowling ball!)), The Spleen (Paul Ruebens with a severe gas problem), Invisble Boy (Kel
Mitchell, only so when no one looks at him!) and the groups mentor The Sphinx (Wes Studi).
So How Does This Transfer Hold Up?
VIDEO
Had it not been for the Far to low Black Level, this Anamorphic Widescreen
Transfer would have been reference quality. As happens far too often on Universal
DVDs this problem with an incorrect black level will require an increase in your TV
Brightness to make it look acceptable (but not too much as itll make the picture
look too mucky!) . After doing so youll find a very nice transfer that is rich in
colour, high in detail and as sharp as a tac!
The movie has also been spread over 2 layers of the RSDL DVD. The Change occurs at the
73:19 minute mark (chapter 10 to 11 on a fade, and is only noticeable by the quick audio
drop out)
AUDIO
As youd expect from movies of this sort, you get a very nice Dolby Digital 5.1 track
in English (as well as in French, Italian and Spanish). Not only is the front sound stage
nice and wide, with a tremendous amount of detail, but surround usage is constant as is
the bass attack attack. Good Shhtuff!!!!
EXTRAS
When Universal make a Collectors Edition DVD, they dont hold much back!
Included on this DVD is A Running Commentary with Director Kinka Usher, though he
at times he tends to get a bit repeatitive
.
Spotlight on Location, which is a 17 minutes making of featurette with cast and
crew interviews intervcut with behind the scenes footage and snippets of the movie (you
also get english and french subtitles on this 4x3 formatted featuretee)
19 minutes worth of chaptered Deleted Scenes (presented in 4x3 with Dolby Digital
2.0 sound)
Music highlights which allows you to jump to a particular song in the movie
Origins of the Mystery Men (text based info)
Production Notes, Cast & Film Makes Bios, a Theatrical
Trailer (4x3 with Dolby Surround) and
DVD-ROM content mostly text based additions here. Behind the
Scenes, On Location, Comic Book Gallary (samples) Postcards, Screensavers and a puzzle
games thingy!
All in all this is a great DVD for a very lame movie that I just loved!
