As I have said in recent reviews… Sandra Bullock really does get better with each new film she does and Miss Congeniality really just proves my point. She started out in more serious roles and as they get funnier she gets better.

Sandra Bullock plays FBI Agent Gracie Hart who is by no means a lady of any description (frightening at times given that I can see so many of my own characteristics in her). Gracie is a gusty woman who doesn’t take shit from anyone, she doesn’t brush her hair she wears boots instead of shoes she guzzles meat pies and take away and has one of those fabulous snorts when she laughs.

After screwing up an important raid she is put on the backburner for a while pending some discipline. However as the only female which a half decent body she is enlisted undercover in an exercise at the Miss United States Pageant.

Gracie actually winds up taking in part in the Pageant at Miss New Jersey. After some extraordinary work from an old Pageant master Victor Melling (Michael Caine) she is transformed into quite a beautiful young lady and quite a contender for the top spot in the pageant really.

While she is undergoing the preliminaries as Miss New Jersey she stumbles and breaks a few of the Pageant traditions but at the same time she comes through with the goods.

You’ll have to watch it to see what happens in the end but you’ll be entertained along the way so it doesn’t really matter.

So how does this transfer hold up?

VIDEO
The 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is in my opinion extremely close to reference quality. I have heard reports from friends that it shows some small flaws on a much larger screen but on your average TV and especially one converted to 16x9 these are hard to spot. There are no mpeg artefacts and no film artefacts. A hint of edge enhancement could be seen but it’s hard to spot so I won’t deduct any points for that. Colour was brilliant throughout and showed perfect saturation for the context of the film.

The images are consistently sharp and clear, and shadow detail is good.

AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track was also very good. Dialogue was easy to understand throughout and there were no sync problems.

The surround channels were limited in supporting the sound effects and the score. The lfe channel, similarly was not felt very often as well. There seems to be a lot of centre channel based dialogue and limited use of the full sound stage. While of course this is no big sound film it still could have had a little more beefing up.

The score from Edward Shearmur is less than great and could have been widely improved with some pieces that reflected a mood in the film, instead of just adding background music.

EXTRAS

  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Dolby Digital Canyon Trailer
  • Cast and Crew filmographies: Standard Filmograpies for the main cast and crew.
  • Featurette: The pageant: Some interesting behind the scenes footage and deleted scenes with commentary from the director. 12 mins Featurette:
  • Preparing for the pageant: A very short behind the scenes doco with some limited commentary from the director. Not too bad but should have been combined with the other featurette.
  • Audio Commentary: Donald Petrie: A very slow and demanding commentary that does provide some good background information but at times left me feeling very sleepy indeed.
  • Audio Commentary: Sandra Bullock and Marc Lawrence: Not a bad commentary, Sandra bullock seems very involved in what is happening on screen and there are no real breaks in the commentary to slow it down at all. Given that she also produced the film she does have some interesting things to say at times, instead of continually talking about herself.

Overall
Hilarious flick! Go out and buy it I say!
