You know you're off to a good start with a movie when
it takes the mickey out of itself and has you rolling on the floor laughing.
The opening Cheerleading sequence in Bring it On is
a perfect example of such a thing. (the use of subtitles is strongly suggested for
repeated viewings as it's even funnier when you can Read what they Cheer.... I found the
same thing with South Park : B.L.U ..Cass can back me up here :))
Torrance (Kirsten Dunst) is in her final year of high
school and has just been nominated as Head Cheerleader of the school team, the Torros.
Her first day on the job ends in disaster as Big Carver, one of the cheerleaders,
falls and breaks more than her leg during a "wolf wall" one of the hardest human
pyramids a cheerleader can do. So Torrance isn't off to a good start in her new
role, and now they have to find a replacement for Big Carver.
During Auditions they find the perfect candidate in Missy an ex gymnast (Eliza Duchk..aka
Faith from TV's Buffy).
After Missy gets off on the wrong foot with the Torros two bitchiest cheerleaders Whitney
(Nicole Bilderback) and Courtney(Clare Kramer...aka Glory from TV's Buffy), she decides
cheerleading isn't for her. Torrance tries to convince her to give it a go, but when
Missy discovers that the Torro's ex-head Cheerleader Big Red () had been ripping off their
Cheers from The East Compton High "Clovers" (unbeknownst to ANYONE else on the
team, including Torrance)), things take a turn for the worst as the Torro's now have to
come up with a new batch of Cheers for them to compete in the the big Cheer-off!
With it's tongue planted firstly in it's cheek, Bring it on
shows us the world of Cheerleading Valley Girl Style :) |
So how does this transfer hold up?

VIDEO
"I'm sexy I'm Cute I'm Popular to boot!"
This is quite an eye popping Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer and the
Colours just leap of the screen. Overall the image is incredibly clean and sharpness
in nearly all instances is excellent, which leads to great image depth.
With the Torro's uniforms primarily being red, they look intense. (this movie has been
transferred from an Interpositive and they tend to push the pinks and red a little
more). Fleshtones are uniformly very good, and you certainly can't say this transfer
is in any way undersaturated.
Black level is very good and never wavers throughout the course of the film.
The only real letdown is the few instances of MPEG Artifacting, etc. (thankfully they're
not too nasty and are only a minor deterrent)
Nasty #1 is during chapter 9 at around 29:24 as Missy is doing her little dance
in her cheerleaders outfit. (it's exceptionally quick being only a single frame or
two)
Nasty #2 occurs at the very start of Ch 10 which is the car wash sequence.
(you see the picture break up for a few frames as the character Les is walking across
screen with his video camera)
Nasty #3 is during chapter 16 at around 66:22 Torrance is talking to her
dad. (the image jitters a little)
Split over 2 layers of an RSDL DVD the layer change occurs
at the start of Chapter 16. unfortunately the sound cue of the door slamming runs
over both shots and so it cut midway, and as a result is a tad noticeable. (how I look
forward to the day were DVD players have decent memory buffers) |

AUDIO
"Say it with me now.... SPIRIT FINGERS"
Holy Dooly! The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix on this DVD is
something to be heard! Given the premise of the movie, one wouldn't expect much in
the audio department, but you'd be sooo wrong :) This is an awesome sound mix.
It's incredibly Dynamic, Surround usage is very well utilised, and never under or
over done. Bass Attack is tight clean fast and furious (mostly confined to the
cheerleading routines) and dialogue is always clean and clear (it's only on occasions that
the audio sounds a little too post-dubbed)
English Subtitles are provided.
It's just a fun-fun mix with some terrific music and songs.
I should point out the USA release of this Movie carries a DTS 5.1 Track and I'd expect it
to have some improvements even over our excellent 448kbps encoded Dolby Digital
Mix. (our version unfortunately missed out on the DTS track simply due to disc
space limitations). |

I took a chance and saw this at the cinemas and within
about 30 seconds of the hilarious opening music dance number new exactly what I was in
for. Taken in the right vein you will LOVE this movie. It's one of the best
"teen comedies" to have been released in years and have been served up very
nicely on DVD. ... Go Team Go!!! |
