For any of you who liked that fabulous classic
"Wall Street" then youll also love this too. Boiler Room is another deep
look into some of the temptations set up by todays stock trading industry.
Seth Davis (Giovanni Ribisi) is a greedy little college student who has dropped out of
school to run his lucrative and yet illegal private casino from his home. While the little
business is making him a pretty penny he still wants more. And with a little push from his
father a respected Judge he takes on a greedy job of a more legal kind. After meeting a
successful stockbroker he decides to take up a trainee position at a local stock broking
firm JT Marlin.
While all appears to be going well for young Seth who is basically raking in the
customers, there is a little dodgy business going on in the background.
Things start to heat up though when Seths father becomes involved, and things
start to turn in a completely different direction.
I cant really tell you much more with out spoiling the story but really this is a
great flick! I was impressed with some of the references to Wall Street which is an all
time favourite of mine and like some of these characters I can recite the entire movie
word for word sheerly from having watched it so many times.
So how does this transfer hold up? |

VIDEO
While the 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen transfer is very good there are a
scattering of small problems, which spoil it.
The transfer is very sharp throughout and there were no
problems with edge enhancement at all. Shadow detail was also very good and even in the
darkest of scenes lost no detail.
There are some instances of grain, which are barely noticeable, and also some small
instances of shimmering. There are no MPEG artefacts and only a few small film artefacts.
The saturation of colour seemed to be a little bit off though as the colours had
potential to be bright and hitting with a big impact, they seemed to be just a little more
muted than I would expect.
The transfer is very good overall but some of these small problems put a dent in
its quality |
AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 5.0 audio track was also a little
disappointing. The film is predominantly dialogue driven and given the nature of the
scenes the dialogue often becomes difficult to understand because of the other background
noise. While this is not a transfer problem is did make the film a little annoying at
times to feel you were missing half of what the characters were saying.
The surround channels were used quite well to support the
score and give some ambience to the film but never really had a great impact.
The score was well mixed and fitted the young and ambitious category well with mostly
fast moving modern styles.
As I got more and more frustrated with not being able to understand some of the
dialogue I switched on the subtitles and was amazed to see that halfway through the film
the subtitles are thrown out by about 2-3 minutes. So from then on the subtitles do not
match the on screen action. Luckily I wasnt relying on them, as this could get quite
confusing for someone who was. |
EXTRAS
- Dolby Aurora Trailer
- Theatrical Trailer
- Cast and Crew Bios
- 3 Deleted Scenes: 3 scenes worth deleting
- Alternate Ending: an interesting and quite different ending
to the film.
- Audio Commentary: G. Ribisi, B. Younger, and J. Todd: give
this one a miss; this is confusing and recorded separately so the comments dont gel
together at all.
OVERALL
While the transfer needs some improvement I loved the story and would recommend it.
