....

Hmm where to start with this one? Town and Country is certainly a little strange but I think it came home with the goods in the end and made a memorable mark.

This is a fantastic cast and they all gave great performances. The film is based around Porter and Ellie Stoddard (Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton) who live in an upper-class life in the City of New York. They’re best friends Griffin and Mona (Gary Shandling and Goldie Hawn) live further out of town also in a classy neighbourhood. All seems to be going perfectly for the two families until Mona follows Griffin one day to discover he is having an affair. She turns to Porter her life long best friend for advice and Porter tries to handle the situation admirably but deep down he is churning over his own little affair. He seems to want to end the affair but can’t quite get on top of it.

In an effort to help Mona, he goes on a trip to one of her other houses in Mississippi and the two of them get a little closer than they should. This really throws a spanner in the works as Porter has always been the solid reliable rock, but now his life is turning more and more every day.

Griffin offers porter a few days away in the snow to help him clear his head, here he falls into another 2 women Eugenie (Andie Macdowell) the daughter of a psychotic right wing family who think he should marry her, not that she doesn’t have a few screws loose herself. Then there’s Auburn (Jenna Elfman) who is a bit fruity but shows Porter how to have a good time again.

Of course porter gets so caught up in all these women and their different situations he is heading for trouble!

VIDEO
The 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is a little on the soft side but is still generally very good. While the images are generally sharp and clear there are the odd shots, which go a little soft due to grain or even intentional soft focus use on some of the aging actors.

The colour palette was bright and vibrant at all times. A good indication of the colour level is presented on the dvd cover. The greater hues in the colours were almost a little overdone and on occasion made some of the skin tones a little less than natural.

There were only some minor MPEG artefacts, which were barley noticeable, and I did not see any aliasing or film artefacts.

In all a very nice transfer.

AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track was a little more impressive. There is also a Dolby 2.0 audio track on this one but I didn’t listen to a lot of it.. Of course when there is 5.1 on offer it takes priority.

Dialogue was always clear and easy to understand and there were no audio sync problems.

The film is of course dialogue based so there were not a lot of audio effects but the surround channels did do their job when required even it wasn’t terribly often. Similarly the LFE channel was rarely called upon but this was again not a bad point, as it simply wasn’t needed.

The score from Rolfe Kent was lively and fit well with the film and it’s comedic base.

OVERALL
I really enjoyed this film and the performances from the all-star cast, but I’m sure it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
