....

Five short stories are told in this movie involving a great cast of six leading actresses. Each story is intertwined with the other stories and this develops as the movie goes on. Each story has a different emotion as its theme ranging from loneliness, loss, denial of love, new relationships, basically many of the situations that many people (not just women) can empathise with.

There is great acting in this movie and while it starts slowly it does pull in the viewer, particularly as more interplay develops between the stories. Also connecting the stories is the appearance of another woman in each story. At the start of the movie a scene shows that she has just committed suicide and this same woman makes an appearance in each story, so the viewer can play spot the woman!

Obviously this movie would be considered a chick flick but there is no reason why men should not also get something out of the movie. It is also great to see a movie that has women playing all the lead roles with the male actors fitting in around them. Despite the often sad themes that are encountered the movie is not that heavy and does not leave the viewer depressed, in fact it leaves the viewer with a feeling of hope that these situations can be overcome. The overall effect is a very watchable movie to sit down and enjoy on a quiet evening.

So how does this transfer hold up?

VIDEO
The Anamorphic Widescreen transfer in general is mostly quite good and images are sharp and clear. However a number of artefacts and picture break ups are visible (on some systems). On my set-up the worst example appears at 17:34 in a scene with Holly Hunter where there is a very obvious picture break up and another minor example occurs at 35.43. Most of the blemishes appear in the first part of the movie and the picture quality is good thereafter. However not all DVD players appear to display these defects. Overall the colour tones complement the mood of the movie and skin tones are realistic.

AUDIO
The movie is presented as a Dolby Digital 5.1 track and in general the audio track is good but since the movie is predominantly dialogue based there is no need for dramatic sound effects and hence the surrounds are barely used. There is however some pleasant music used at times to set the feeling. Audio synch is good and the dialogue clarity is excellent, which is very important in this movie as the viewer is hanging on every word of the conversations.

EXTRAS
Essentially there are no extras to speak of with only a theatrical trailer included. It is a shame there are no interviews with the cast members as it would have been interesting to hear their take on their stories since each story was centered around them completely.

An enjoyable movie to watch on a quiet night.
