Look! Up in the sky... it’s a bird, it’s a plane, but no it’s not another DVD18 Special edition of Superman 2!

From the outset, the plan was to make 2 films almost for the price of 1.  Superman 1 and 2 where to be shot back to back and released a year or so apart.  However, Director Richard Donner was fired 2/3 of the way throughout the shot of Superman 2 and was replaced by Richard Lester.  Sometime later the rest of Superman 2 was shot. (it was actually released 3 years after the original in the USA, and only 2 years later outside the USA)

While superman had a sense of awe and wonder about it, Superman 2 is quite a bit grittier and meaner.  That's not to say it took a Ridley Scott approach in tone, but was rather far less "fluffy" than the original.

Over there years there has been much debate as to which superman film is better, but neither parties can really say that one sucks and the other is great, as Superman 2 is a terrific and very faithful followup to its superior Original :))

At the End of Part 1 Superman had saved the girl, foiled the baddy and as a result, saved the world (aka the United States of America:) from destruction.

Meanwhile, those who have escaped the exploding planet Krypton have sentence General Zod (Terence [Priscilla, Queen of the Desert] Stamp) and his two sidekicks  Ursa and Non (Sarah Douglas and Jack O'Hallaran) to life imprisonment in a spinning mirror thingy which floats around space.

Just as Superman saves The Eiffel Tower from being blown up by terrorists, he trusts the bomb into outer space and the shockwave has an unfortunate sideeffect.  It unleashes the three baddies from exile.!  These 3 baddies headed for earth the try rein supreme.

So how does this DVD Scrub Up?
....

VIDEO
This Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer is pretty good, but not a patch on the cleaned up Original.  which is a shame.
Some effort has certainly been put into the transfer as the print looks to have been dusted and polished to remove some greasy dirt and grime (there are still a few instances of nicks and scratches).
Colour Saturation is quite nice as is sharpness (thought the diffused focusing had a slightly grimy look about it).
The one real difference to notice is the footage shot a year or so down the track.   This looks, well, newer, though it's nothing too serious and won't detract from the film too much.

Spread over 2 layers of an RSDL DVD the layer change occurs fast than a speeding bullet at 66:08 on a close up of Lois

AUDIO
Bummer.  While Superman 1 received a super 5.1 remix and remaster.   #2 is left with it's original 2 channel sound, encoded only as Dolby Digital 2.0 :(
It does the job for a film of it's vintage, but no matter how much you like it, it's hard not to compare it to it's far superior sounding #1.

Dialogue is pretty clean and clear throughout, there is some surround usage and the music score is nicely placed around the room.

EXTRAS
Like the picture and sound, we've been gypped on the extras.   All you get is a trailer and a cast and crew listing.

The movie may be almost as good as it's prequel, but the DVD itself ain't a patch on the Superman Special Edition.  This picture is quite nice and certainly  quite watchable.  and the sound does what it can, but is a bit lacking.  As for the Extras, yes well......  For the fans only.
