Whilst the score is very much a predictable film with
little deviance from the main plot I still found it to be class A entertainment. The
performances from Marlon Brando, Robert de Niro and Edward Norton were fantastic, as
expected.
Robert de Niro (Nick) plays a seasoned safe breaker who is of course the best at his
job. Under the direction of Max (Marlon Brando) he gets all the best jobs and does all the
best work. He covers his unscrupulous activities behind a high-class jazz club in Montreal
where he also lives when he is not on a job.
After what looks like a relatively easy job Max offers Nick the biggest pay out of all
at 4 million dollars. At first Nick immediately says no as the job is based in his
hometown and for his whole career he has never done a job "in his own backyard".
However after a little thought and the prospect of having enough money to never have to
steal again he puts forward the proposal of settling down to his girlfriend (Angela
Bassett). She makes one rule however that he is never to do another job
.. but, to
achieve this he does have to do just one more job!
Enter Edward Norton as Jackie who has all the inside information needed to pull the job
off smoothly. As the film catch phrase states though "There are no partners in
crime", and it becomes apparent right from the beginning that there is going to be
trouble with the two of them working together.
Jackie is young and cocky and there is a strong element of distrust between them, but
for the reward Nick must go with the flow.
