Whilst the score is very much a predictable film with little deviance from the main plot I still found it to be class A entertainment. The performances from Marlon Brando, Robert de Niro and Edward Norton were fantastic, as expected.

Robert de Niro (Nick) plays a seasoned safe breaker who is of course the best at his job. Under the direction of Max (Marlon Brando) he gets all the best jobs and does all the best work. He covers his unscrupulous activities behind a high-class jazz club in Montreal where he also lives when he is not on a job.

After what looks like a relatively easy job Max offers Nick the biggest pay out of all at 4 million dollars. At first Nick immediately says no as the job is based in his hometown and for his whole career he has never done a job "in his own backyard". However after a little thought and the prospect of having enough money to never have to steal again he puts forward the proposal of settling down to his girlfriend (Angela Bassett). She makes one rule however that he is never to do another job ….. but, to achieve this he does have to do just one more job!

Enter Edward Norton as Jackie who has all the inside information needed to pull the job off smoothly. As the film catch phrase states though "There are no partners in crime", and it becomes apparent right from the beginning that there is going to be trouble with the two of them working together.

Jackie is young and cocky and there is a strong element of distrust between them, but for the reward Nick must go with the flow.

So how does this DVD Scrub Up?

VIDEO
The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is fabulous! The entire transfer is perfectly sharp throughout and shadow detail is perfect! This is quite an achievement as a good portion of the film is in dark and low light scenes.

The colour palette is also spectacular. Most of the film is highly saturated and gives a very natural feeling. This is offset with dark and drab colours in which set off the mood of the film nicely.

Unfortunately there are a few small problems, which bring this short of reference quality. These consist of some slight aliasing problems and some small film artefacts. Neither really detracts from the viewing of the film but both are small flaws in the transfer.

There were no mpeg artefacts seen in this transfer.

AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is also very good. Dialogue is always clear and easy to understand, except of course for Marlon Brando’s mumbling accent.

The film is mostly dialogue based but when required the surround channels are used well. Similarly the lfe channel is used to beef up effects but is often very quiet. This film is not heavily based on sound effects though so this isn’t too much of a downfall.

The score from Howard Shore isn’t terribly memorable as some of his past work has been but it still compliments the on screen action well.

  • Cast and Crew Bio’s: Extensive biographies and filmographies for all the main characters and the Director.
  • Featurette: Making of: 12 minutes of promotional bits and pieces, clips and interviews.
  • Audio Commentary: Frank Oz and Rob Hahn: Again an extensive insight to the technical aspects of shooting the film, with some information on the actors and the other interesting info behind the making of the film, in all a very easy listening commentary.
  • Deleted Scenes (3): 3 interesting alternate or cut scenes, which could quite easily have been used in the film and not hindered its impact.

OVERALL
I really enjoyed this, not really a brain working film but certainly enough character depth to keep you interested.
