....

Ever been to movies with a friend (probably a female) who spent the whole time going gaa-gaa over a character in the film… doing the "oh he’s so adorable" routine for the entire film?

Well that’s me, when it comes to Jonathon Lipnicki; he’s just so cute! I get the feeling he’ll go a long way in the film industry even when he’s older and passed the insanely cute stage.

The little Vampire is the store of Tony Thompson (Jonathon) who has moved from the United States to a dark and mysterious house in Scotland where his father is working.

Tony soon becomes the subject and ridicule and bullying at his new school, as he doesn’t really seem to fit in the well.

All of this changes though when he meets Rudolph a little Vampire around the same age as Tony. The two instantly become best friends and… no! Not from sucking each other’s blood! The story then develops into a bit of a thicker plot with Rudolph’s family in search of an amulet, which has been hidden for 300 years. This amulet would give them the power to become humans. The catch is, the amulet will only work it’s magic on one night on the passing of a comet. All too easy unless you have a vampire hunter on our trail that knows this secret and is determined to prevent it from happening.

Of course all’s well that ends well and Tony not only enjoys his new friends but he does a dam good job of scaring the other kids at school too.

So how does this DVD Scrub Up?

VIDEO
The 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is very very good. The images are for the most sharp and clear throughout. Shadow detail is compromised at times with dark and poor lighting, which also lends itself to some slight graininess.

This does not have a significant effect on the transfer and I would generally attribute it to a filming problem rather than a transfer fault.

The colour palette is exquisite! A good example of a nicely rendered bigger budget film with bright heavily saturated colours, complimented with the dark subtle and calming colours of the Scottish country side, night or day the colour was perfect.

There were no mpeg artefacts or ailiasing and I did not find any major film artefacts.

AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track was a little less lacklustre. The audio is generally dialogue based and this was always clear and easy to understand. There were a couple of small audio sync problems but these do not appear to be a transfer fault.

The surround channels seemed to be used sparingly to support some small directional effects and the score.

The LFE channel was also used sparingly and never really made itself present that much.

The score from Nigel Clark was nothing memorable but seemed to do its job in supporting the film.
