Well… where to start with this one. This would have to be one of the strangest films I’ve seen recently and very difficult to summarise so I will just give you an idea about it and you can see it for yourself as this one is a difficult film to really categorise at all.

He died with a felafel in his hand is based on the book by John Birmingham which I haven’t read and really don’t think I could read after watching the film. I get the felling it would come across as a disjointed and hard to follow story, which I found was the same with the film at times.

Noah Taylor plays Daniel Kirkhope who lives in a share house in Queensland (his 47th share house) with a group of characters who rang from eccentric to borderline normal to just completely whacked! It seems most of these people don’t have a job aside from Daniel who fancy’s himself as a writer and aspires to write the ever aspired to article for penthouse and finally earn himself some real money. He lives with one character that lives in a tent and looks like he has a job another who is permanently planted in front of the TV and never moves and then of course there is mildly attractive Sammy (Emily Hamilton) who seems to be the only basically normal person in the house. She pretty much stays out of everyone’s way.

After the group has been basically evicted for not paying rent, have had a satanic worship ceremony in the backyard an had the house cut to pieces with a chain saw by skinheads Daniel decides to head off to Melbourne to the next share house.

From here the film explores one more share house after another where the characters remain strange and some of the old ones even come back to haunt him.

Really you need to see this film to be able to decide on whether you like it, as I don’t think this would be to everyone’s taste in any category.

So how does this DVD Scrub Up?

VIDEO
The 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is very good in deed. I am a lover of Australian film and one of my favourite things is the natural feeling you get from these films, as opposed the big budget fake perfection that comes with the typically Hollywood style film. By no means does that indicate that this is a substandard transfer.

The images are clear and sharp throughout with only some very minor ailiasing that doesn’t have any impact on the film at all.

Shadow detail is great with only some loss in detail due to very low-level lighting. This is not a transfer fault though. The colour palette is very well rendered with a prevalence of natural more muted tones off set by the occasional bright and striking colours to really set off a scene.

There are no mpeg artefacts and only some very small film artefacts that mar this transfer.

AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is not so much a track to really emphasise the audio capabilities here. The film is predominantly dialogue based and this is always clear concise and easy to understand.

The surround channels are used to full effect usually to support directional effects and the score. The LFE channel doesn’t really do a lot of work but it plays a small part and plays it well. There really wasn’t a lot of cal for this in the film at all.

The score consists of a collection of current tracks, which really play a big part in setting the mood for the film. (Anything with Moby in the score has to be good!)

This is a nice audio track to compliment a nice a video transfer.

OVERALL
I think I liked this film but it’s hard to tell I think many more viewings will enlighten many parts of the story but for now it’s good and the transfer gets good marks too.
