Angel Eyes is right up there in the snoozer category, grab a pillow and a comfy position on the couch cause this one will surely put you to sleep. Whilst I am one the rare fans of slow romantic movies this one just doesn’t make the grade unfortunately.

Jennifer Lopez plays Sharon Pogue a Chicago street cop who has little really going on in her life; until one day on the job when she is at the hands of a gunman, she is saved by a mysterious man. Catch (Jim Caviezel) is a strange man who appears to be somewhat dishevelled and homeless to begin with. We then see a greater side to catch doing favours for others and of course winning over the attractive Sharon.

Sharon slowly becomes more involved with Catch and as she does begins to discover that he has a lot of dark secrets in his closet. The big twist to the plot comes when Sharon finds out the truth about catch and his past.

Can she save him from his own state of mind??

There really isn’t a lot more to say about this movie, it moves slow and doesn’t really have a lot of depth. The acting is good but doesn’t provide any standout performances. Jennifer Lopez should have passed on this one.

So how does this DVD Scrub Up?

VIDEO
The 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is really very good, and given the standard of the film was a little surprising.

The transfer is consistently sharp and clear throughout and shadow detail was also very good. Given the amount of scenes with a low light level this is a good achievement.

The colour palette was generally good but at times seemed a little too muted and a little on the high contrast side. The colours were very realistic and skin tones were good but it was obvious that the filmmakers had manipulated the film to have a more muted tone to it.

There were some minor instances of aliasing but most of these were barely noticeable and didn't detract from the viewing of the film. There were also some small film artefacts that again were not that noticeable unless you were looking for them.

AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is adequate for the film but does leave a memorable impression by any means.

The film is highly dialogue based and the dialogue is always clear and easy to understand, although there were some smalls problems with audio sync which caught my eye the most obvious at around 49 minutes which is clearly way out of sync.

The surround channels were used sparingly and could have had a much bigger impact on the audio track. Similarly the lfe channel rarely came into action to support some of the score and a few effects.

The score from Marco Beltrami was again only adequate and didn’t really leave much of an impression.

EXTRAS

  • Dolby Digital Rain Trailer
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Trailers: The Cavemans Valentine, The Wedding Planner
  • Audio Commentary: Luis Mandoki: I can honestly say I couldn’t sit through this, I just couldn’t. I tried to force myself but this is the worst audio commentary I have ever heard. Please don’t waste your time.

OVERALL
This was tolerable and slightly interesting but I really can’t say much more about it.
