Wonder Boys was a film that I really regretted missing at the Cinemas but the lack of publicity really didn’t help the film. This could have been quite a big success if there had been a little more effort put into advertising and publicity. It sports some big names in Michael Douglas, Robert Downey Jr. and of course Tobey Maguire who is making a really good impression in film circles. Surely these actors alone could have drawn a lot more attention to the film.

None the less when I finally did get to enjoy it in my own lounge room I was most impressed.

Michael Douglas plays the character of a passionate writer/university professor who seems be struggling in finishing his current novel. Over the course of the weekend, a brilliant student, who is also a natural writer, changes his life dramatically: James Leer (Tobey Maguire).

Grady Tripp (Douglas) has had his wife leave him in the morning and then finds out that the woman he is having an affair with Sara (Frances McDormand) is pregnant. While he comes across as friend to her husband their dog does not have the same impression of him.

On the same weekend Grady’s editor Terry Crabtree (Robert Downey Jr.) is in town to give Grady a bit of a hurry up on his new novel. Terry develops a bit of an unusual relationship with James and it becomes apparent that James has quite a knack for story telling; in fact most of his life is a story it seems.

And while all of this is unfolding there is one more character that throws another slice in the pie Hannah Green (Katie Holmes), is boarding with Grady and she also has a bit of crush on her professor.

The plot really has quite a few tangents, which all come together very nicely, and make for an enjoyable afternoon on the couch!

So how does this transfer hold up?
....

VIDEO
This transfer is presented at the strange ratio of 2.30:1 and is thankfully Anamorphic Widescreen

The transfer is generally sharp and clear throughout. There are some instances of edge enhancement but these are not overly obvious and are something you have to really search for so they do not create a problem.

Shadow detail is excellent and at no time was there any loss of detail. The main problems with the transfer stem from aliasing and some film artefacts. Ailiasing was frequently noticeable throughout the film and its severity differed but its frequency did become annoying.

There were also quite a few small film artefacts during the film in the form of dusts flecks and marks on the transfer. The colour palette was used to full effect and emphasised the dim colours of winter n the snow with greys blues and browns being predominant and supporting the film environment.

AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is really very good. Dialogue was always clear and easy to understand. The surround channels are used quite frequently but are never a great presence, just enough to provide ambience to the soundtrack and directional effects in the film. I was actually impressed with this subtle yet effective use of the surrounds. Similarly the LFE channel was only minimally brought in to play in the soundtrack and this is all that was required of it.

The soundtrack was also very inspiring with the inclusion of the Bob Dylan hit, which won an academy award for the film: Things Have Changed, and of course other Bob Dylan classics.

Overall the audio track is well mixed and quite impressive.

EXTRAS

  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Featurette – Pittsburgh interactive location Map: This is an interactive look at the locations in which the film was shot including some background information from the director, however the transfer quality here is disappointing to say the least with many poor and obvious problems.
  • Featurette – Singer/Songwriters of Wonder Boys: discussions from the director on the choices for the soundtrack and of course the inclusion of Bob Dylan.
  • Cast and Crew Interviews: A selection of clips from the film and discussions with the principal actors.
  • Music Video – Things have changed / Bob Dylan
  • Audio Commentary- Curtis Hanson (director): 5 short comments from the director during the film. I found this a much better way of formatting an audio track than some of the lengthy and tedious tracks I have come across in the past.

OVERALL
This is a great film, which will make you think and re-evaluate your life a little. It comes highly recommended.

I also have to say whilst most others would disagree with me I like the clip style case that this DVD is presented in. It is much easier to get the disc out of the case and yeah it might sound stupid but it’s also fingernail friendly! (For us women :)

PICTURE QUALITY   7.5/10 a few problems
SOUND Quality
- 5.1 WOW Factor

  8/10 a nice mix
  5/10 not required really

EXTRAS   5/10 a good selection but lacks quality
OVERALL    8/10 a great film.
